Legislator Nancy E. Barr presents check to Maria Samuels, Executive Director of WDOM

Westchester County Legislator Nancy E. Barr (D – Harrison, Rye Brook, Port Chester) has delivered $64,691 in funding to Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. to help sustain some of its most critical programs.

Since its founding in 1984, Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. (WDOM) has championed inclusivity, accessibility, and equality for people with disabilities in Westchester County. This non-residential agency provides free support and services to people of all ages, helping them live more independent, joyful lives. People with disabilities primarily staff and govern WDOM.

With support from her colleagues on the Board of Legislators, Legislator Barr secured $28,641 for WDOM's Fair Housing – Accessible & Affordable program. This initiative helps residents with disabilities apply for appropriate, accessible, affordable housing and advocates for them during the admissions process.

The Board also approved $36,050 for WDOM's My Home Not Nursing Home program, which integrates multiple services supporting independent living. WDOM Service Coordinators work with family members, caregivers, nursing homes, and related organizations to educate them about benefits available to those who want to avoid or leave institutionalization. The program operates on the philosophy that people with disabilities can lead rich, independent lives with proper support.

"Legislator Barr's efforts to secure $64,691 in funding for WDOM's programs has enabled us to give a voice to even more people with disabilities, providing them with resources and solutions to remain independent and live their best lives," said Maria Samuels, Executive Director of WDOM. "All of us at WDOM are grateful for the support of the entire Board of Legislators, which helps us level the playing field for people with disabilities."

"I was pleased to advocate for funding for WDOM's life-changing programs," said Legislator Barr. "Every Westchester resident deserves dignity and a safe, secure place to live. These programs help people with disabilities live as independently and affordably as possible, thanks to the devoted WDOM staff who work tirelessly to serve adults with special housing needs."

This partnership between Legislator Barr, the Board of Legislators, and WDOM reaffirms their commitment to supporting the well-being and resilience of vulnerable community members.
