The legislation is designed to safeguard communities in New York's Hudson Valley region and represents a response to plans by Holtec International to dispose of over a million gallons of radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River as part of Indian Point’s decommissioning process. The state government, under Governor Hochul, intends to work closely with federal regulators, Holtec, local officials, and the State's Decommissioning Oversight Board to identify feasible and environmentally safe alternatives for wastewater disposal, with a goal of continuing the decommissioning process in a way that preserves jobs and ensures prompt and thorough site cleanup.
