In its sixteenth Board meeting of the year, the Westchester County Board of Legislators passed several initiatives, including affordable housing, sewage and electric infrastructure upgrades, and the replacement of a 45-year-old smokehouse building.

Chairman Vedat Gashi (D-New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown) said, "Today, we reaffirm our commitment to affordable housing as we take vital steps to enhance our community infrastructure, including upgrades to critical systems in Yonkers and New Rochelle. As we honor the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in Israel, and as Rabbi Ben Goldberg reminded us, Today, let us strengthen our resolve to build a safer, more inclusive Westchester for all."

Affordable Housing

The Board passed a Bond Act for $1,030,000 and an Act to authorize the purchase of property located at 60 Kensico Avenue in the City of White Plains as part of the County's program to support the creation of affordable housing units to affirmatively further fair housing in Westchester County. The housing will remain affordable for at least fifty years.

Additional Items Passed

The Board also passed a bond act for $6 million to finance design and procurement services associated with replacing all electrical distribution and lighting system equipment at the Yonkers Joint Treatment Plant, which was installed in the early 1970s. Items to be replaced will include switchgear, substations, motor control centers, lighting panels, and all associated wiring.

In addition, the Board approved funding for the replacement of a 45-year-old smokehouse used for firefighter training. This upgrade will ensure that our first responders have access to modern training facilities, enhancing their preparedness for emergencies.

Additionally, the Board approved a Bond Act for a capital project at the New Rochelle Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility. This will fund important upgrades, including replacing the grit collection system and installing new boilers to handle increased demand. This project will also support updating the building management system and sludge pumps to keep our wastewater treatment running smoothly.
