Starting May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers age 18 and up need a REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. This is a federal requirement under the REAL ID Act to enhance security of state-issued IDs.
A REAL ID is a more secure version of your driver's license or state ID card. In New York, look for a black circle with a white star in the top right corner. An Enhanced ID (marked with a U.S. flag) also works and gives you additional benefits for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.
Do You Need One?
You need a REAL ID or alternative if you plan to:
- Fly domestically after May 7, 2025
- Visit secure federal facilities
A valid U.S. passport or other TSA-approved ID will also work.
How to Get a REAL ID in New York:
- Gather Required Documents: Bring proof of identity, Social Security status, and two proofs of New York State residency. Find out what documents you need.
- Visit a DMV Office: All applications must be done in person - schedule ahead through the DMV's Reservation System.
- Receive Your ID: Your new ID will arrive by mail within about two weeks
Don't Get Stranded!
Without proper ID, you won't be allowed through TSA checkpoints for domestic flights starting May 7, 2025. Get your REAL ID now to avoid travel problems later.
