Westchester's women legislators delivered essential supplies for women experiencing homelessness and domestic violence to the Community Resource Center (CRC) in Mamaroneck today. The eight female members of the 17-person Board of Legislators organized the donation drive collecting personal hygiene products, clothing, transportation cards, and pharmacy gift cards in honor of Women's History Month.
Legislator Nancy E. Barr (D- Harrison, Port Chester, Rye Brook) said, “During Women's History Month, we recognize that women still earn less than men for comparable work, and often carry a larger burden managing households and providing care for family members. Their focus on meeting others' needs means women don't always prioritize their own well-being. When challenges arise, the most vulnerable lack resources for basic essentials like medicine, hygiene items and transportation. We are grateful to organizations like the Community Resource Center, which provide much-needed support to women and families, and we are pleased to supply these donated items to those in need.”
The Community Resource Center, formerly known as the Hispanic Resource Center, is a nonprofit organization providing advocacy and resources to help immigrant and low-income women and families become self-reliant. The donated items will help the center's case management team assist women seeking services during difficult life transitions.
Angelica Carvajal, Case Management Supervisor at the Community Resource Center, said “The items received from this donation drive will be of great help. Our case managers can now provide community members with healthcare, hygiene, and transportation resources during difficult times. The support of the Westchester County Board of Legislators is essential to upholding the dignity of every person in our community. Together, we will ensure that no one is left behind.”
This donation drive builds on other recent Board actions supporting vulnerable women throughout Westchester. The 2025 County Budget included a $101,500 appropriation for the CRC's crisis intervention program assisting domestic violence survivors. Last year, the Board unanimously passed the Safety Measures for Survivors of Domestic Violence Act, ensuring survivors can access new locks when perpetrators reside in the same dwelling.
Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson (D- Elmsford, Greenburgh, Tarrytown, White Plains) said, “On behalf of the Women of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, we are proud to have led this Women's History Month donation drive supporting the Community Resource Center. With its reach across Westchester County, the Center provides essential services to women impacted by domestic violence and is a beacon of hope for survivors. We are especially grateful to our colleagues and staff who generously donated hygiene products, clothing, and gift cards. Their compassion reflects the spirit of community that defines public service. With eight women among the 17 legislators who serve on the Board — myself along with Erika Pierce, Margaret Cunzio, Nancy Barr, Catherine Parker, Emiljana Ulaj, Terry Clements, and Shanae Williams — we remain committed to uplifting women and families throughout our county. We extend our thanks to Executive Director Jirandy Martinez and her team for all they do to help women reclaim their strength, voice, and future. It is an honor to stand alongside them in this important work.”
Minority Leader Margaret A. Cunzio (C- North Castle, Mount Pleasant, Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, Harrison) said, “As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important to focus on women helping women as we build each other up. This donation collection sponsored by women for women is a way to exemplify how we help each other, especially for those in times of need. We will continue to help others and focus on the needs of women throughout Westchester County.”
