On Monday, the Westchester County Board of Legislators hosted a vibrant celebration honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, themed "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together." This theme, designated by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers, underscores the importance of Hispanic representation and participation in shaping our nation's future.
The event honored two distinguished leaders in the Hispanic-American community: Wilson Soto, Esq. of Yonkers, and Karine Patiño, Esq. of Mount Kisco.
In his opening remarks, Chairman of the Board of Legislators Vedat Gashi (New Castle, Ossining, Somers, Yorktown) said, "As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage this evening, let us recognize the significant role that Latinos play in New York and beyond to positively impact their communities and pioneer change for a brighter future together."
Vice Chair José Alvarado (Yonkers) presented the first proclamation to Mr. Soto: "Wilson is a remarkable individual who, after passing the bar, opened his own law practice and has made a profound impact in our community. He has never forgotten his roots in Yonkers and continues to give back selflessly. It is with great honor that we recognize Wilson Soto with this proclamation, signed by all of us here in this Chamber."
Soto expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am humbly honored to be recognized by the Westchester County Board of Legislators during Hispanic Heritage Month for my service to the community. As we celebrate our achievements, remember that our work is ongoing. Together, let us continue to advocate for equity and opportunity, ensuring our community thrives for generations to come."
Legislator Erika Pierce (Bedford, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers) then presented the second proclamation to Ms. Patiño, saying, "I first came to know Karine as I was getting involved in local activism. I wanted to better connect with my Hispanic neighbors, and all hands were pointed to Karine. As I came to know her, the reasons for that became abundantly clear. She champions the values of justice, advocacy, and empathy. She is someone who has put in remarkable effort on behalf of others, using her voice to advocate for those around us who are in need."
Patiño responded, "It's not in how high you rise, but in how many you lift with you. A few data points: US Latinos have the highest rate of new business ownership compared to any other racial-ethnic group starting new businesses. Additionally, Latinos comprise 25.6% of the nation's overall homeownership growth and 19% of the US workforce. Friends, the legacy we leave is measured through the lives we impact and how your actions make it easier for others to shine.”
The Westchester County Board of Legislators remains committed to celebrating and uplifting the Hispanic community, recognizing the strength that diversity brings to our shared future.
