White Plains, NY — A plan is under consideration to move the county’s Family Court in New Rochelle from its current location on North Avenue to the site of a former supermarket on Pelham Road, but one county legislator says he has a better idea.

Legislator Lyndon Williams (D - Mount Vernon) is calling for the court to be re-located from New Rochelle to Mount Vernon. Williams said that he expressed his opinion that Mount Vernon should be considered the site for the Family Court several years ago. However, no decision was being made at the time. Now that a decision as to the location is imminent and, there is opposition to the Family Court by some New Rochelle residents, the Office of Court Administration should give serious consideration to moving the Court to Mount Vernon, where most of the families who use the Court reside, Williams said.

The New Rochelle Family Court is one of three Westchester family courthouse locations, the others being in Yonkers and White Plains.

In addition, Williams says, a site in Mount Vernon may be more cost effective than a move into the former A&P site on Pelham Road currently under consideration and would certainly be more convenient for the majority of the users. Just as the A&P site is under consideration, alternate sites should be explored in Mount Vernon that would be suitable for the Family Court.

“If the court is considering relocating the New Rochelle Family Court anyway, a move to Mount Vernon is the most logical plan,” said Williams. “It will make the court more readily accessible to the majority of those who are appearing before it. In addition, as the county looks to save money by consolidating real estate, examination of a site in Mount Vernon may offer a money-saving solution to the proposed move within New Rochelle.”

The final decision on the re-location of the New Rochelle Family Court will be made by the Office of Court Administration.
