On Monday, August 1st, the Westchester County Board of Legislators unanimously approved the annual budget for Westchester Community College (WCC). WCC’s total budget for fiscal year 2022-23 is $149.5 million. The budget includes an additional investment from the County of $557,000 to maintain tuition affordability for its largest academic institution amid record-high inflation. This marks the second consecutive year without a tuition rate increase.
“If rising prices on everyday purchases are already significantly influencing consumer behavior, imagine what a tuition increase would mean? It means postponing graduation and delaying one’s higher income earning potential,” said Board Chairwoman Catherine Borgia (D), “The Board recognizes the role that Westchester Community College plays in providing upward mobility to students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a college education. Those students deserve support and access now more than ever.”
“Westchester Community College is a valued institution for its socioeconomic impact on our County, and I am more than happy to be a part of approving its funding,” said Legislator Vedat Gashi (D). “We thank our County Executive George Latimer for his leadership and support, as well as WCC President Dr. Belinda Miles and Vice President and Dean of Administrative Services Brian Murphy, for their vision in moving the college’s mission forward.
“As an educator, I firmly believe education is the foundation of our society. With today’s vote, we are proving our dedication to higher learning by making WCC one of the most affordable community colleges in the state,” said Minority Leader Margaret Cunzio (R).
Westchester Community College, originally known as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences, was founded in 1946 in the hamlet of Valhalla within Mount Pleasant, NY. The college expanded to include locations in Peekskill, Ossining, Yonkers, and Mount Vernon offering more than 60 associate and certificate programs each semester. Its mission is focused on a strong commitment to student success, academic excellence, workforce development, and lifelong learning.
