COMMITTEE ON GENERATIONAL, CULTURAL & ETHNIC DIVERSITY

MINUTES: JUNE 20, 2006

MEMBERS: Chair: Bernice Spreckman, Vice-Chair: Vito Pinto; Legislators: Jose Alvarado, Lois Bronz, George Oros, Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Clinton Young.

IN ATTENDANCE: Members: Bernice Spreckman, Lois Bronz, Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Clinton Young. WCDSPS: Mae Carpenter, Dozene Guishard, Laura Bolotsky and Caryl Weinstein. NYSSAC: Lani Sanjek. WC Office of the Disabled: Evan Latainer and Chris Andritsopoulos.

Guest Speakers: Westchester County’s Office for the Disabled: Evan Latainer, Director, and Chris Andritsopoulos.

With a quorum present, Chair Spreckman started the meeting at 10:20 AM.

Evan Latainer, Director of Westchester County’s Office for the Disabled, and his colleague Chris Andritsopoulos, gave a presentation about the County’s Para Transit bus system. They gave an overview of the service, described eligibility requirements and went over the application process. They also provided several application packets and handouts. In addition, they answered a number of questions from the community representatives in attendance.

The committee took time to acknowledge Lani Sanjek, who will retire from her position with Statewide Senior Action Council. Legislator Spreckman spoke about Lani’s dedication to helping New York State’s senior community and her many achievements as an activist in New York City and Westchester County. She was given a proclamation and thanked for her commitment to the senior community.

Legislator Spreckman spoke with the committee about future meetings and the possibility of holding a meeting with the Commissioner of Transportation in September to discuss the County’s bee-line bus service and changes to certain bus routes.

Legislator Spreckman adjourned the meeting at 12:00 PM.
