ARE WESTCHESTER KIDS REALLY MORE OBESE THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE?Family, Health & Human Services Committee Takes Up Health Department’s Childhood Obesity Report

MEDIA ADVISORY: July 24, 2007

Contact: Melanie Montalto, Committee Coordinator, (914)995-8620

Who: - The Family, Health and Human Services Committee, Judy Myers, Chair
- Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Joshua Lipsman

What:

A discussion on the implications of the Health Department’s recent report entitled Fit Kids Body Mass Index Screening Project. Are Westchester kids more obese than the national average? What was the basis for the study? Is the county’s Fit Kids program effective? These are some of the areas of concern that will be discussed.

When: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.

Where: The Michaelian Office Building, 148 Martine Avenue, 8th floor Board of Legislators, in the McPoland Conference Room.

Why:

The county has been running the Fit Kids program in schools throughout the county in an effort to fight childhood obesity since 2003. The Health Department’s May 2007 study implies that the number of Westchester’s children who are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight is slightly higher than the national average. The Committee has several questions regarding how the study was conducted, who was studied, and the status of the Fit Kids program.
