MINUTES: June 28, 2005

COMMITTEE on PUBLIC WORKS MEMBERS: Chair: Young; Legislators: Oros, Pinto

CULTURAL & ETHNIC DIVERSITY MEMBERS: Chair: Young; Legislators: Alvarado, Oros, Pinto

IN ATTENDANCE: CEO: Bill Randolph, Michael Lang; PLANNING: Jeff Williams; DPW: Lou Scarano, Jorge Marmol, James Antonacio; STAFF: Pérez, Bochow

Meeting called to order at 9:45 a.m. for both Committees.

Jeff Williams, Department of Planning, provided an update on the Dr. Martin Luther King Monument. He indicated that he met with the department of Public Works and two sites were selected for the monument. Mr. Williams also indicated that they are awaiting revised cost figures, and that when they receive those figures, more direct action can be pursued with the City of White Plains and the Courthouse.

Legislator Pinto asked if the cost is in two steps: the foundation and adjacent landscaping.

Mr. Williams responded that the artist will be providing the statue and the base and there is no funding allocated for landscaping.

Legislator Oros asked if there is an actual plan for landscaping.

Legislator Young responded that initially we were going to have the monument in the atrium, but with the monument located outside now, the courthouse would take care of the basic upkeep.

Legislator Young asked when the committee could take a look at the possible locations.

It was then agreed that a tour would take place later in the week.

Legislator Young introduced the topic of “Disparity in Healthcare Services in Minority Communities.” He indicated that he would like to have a panel of doctors and other healthcare administrators to present an overall picture of the current problem.

Legislator Oros brought up a recent article about an article on the Journal News about an education mobile unit that will go around Hispanic communities such as Port Chester and Mount Kisco.

Legislator Pinto expressed the possibility of using public access television stations to educate people about current health care services.

Legislator Young distributed some recent articles on the topic to initiate discussion at future committee meetings.

On the motion of Legislator Pinto, seconded by Legislator Oros the CED Committee meeting adjourned at 9:55 a.m.
