LOIS BRONZ LEADS COUNTY BOARD IN
HONORING ACT-SO STUDENTS
ACT-SO winners with Dr. Mary Lane Cobb
At the November 15th Board of Legislators meeting, County Legislator Lois Bronz (D-I-WF, Greenburgh) presented the Westchester winners of the NAACP's ACT-SO ("Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics" founded in 1978) national students program. Dr. Mary Lane Cobb, coordinator of the Westchester region, described the program and its mission to cultivate in African-American youth a respect for academic and artistic achievement and to encourage a quest for scholastic excellence. Each student was presented with a proclamation from his/her district legislator.

Chiamaka Nwakeze of New Rochelle was received by the New Rochelle delegation led by her legislator, Vito Pinto. She won a silver medal for original essay in the national ACT-SO competition and she is a senior at Rye Country Day School. |

Pierre Gonzalez of Tarrytown is a junior at Irvington High School and represented Westchester at the national competition in the drama category. Legislator Bronz presented his proclamation. |

Ryan Williams of Ossining and a senior at Ossining High School, won a gold medal at the national competition in entrepreneurship. At the Goldman Sachs Business Expo in 2003 he won the overall prize for best business plan and best use of technology with his company "Rapappy." He received his proclamation from Legislator Richard Wishnie. |

Ellen Harrikissoon of Mount Vernon is a senior at Mount Vernon High School and a member of the National Honor Society. She competed in the poetry category at the national competition. Legislator Clinton Young presented her with a proclamation. |

Rodney Reynolds of Mount Vernon competed in the oratory category at the national competition. He is a senior at Rye Country Day School where he serves as a peer leader and he is vice-president of the Grace Baptist Church Youth Ministry. He received a proclamation from Legislator Clinton Young. |

Kevin Tribble of Legisator William Ryan's district in White Plains, won a gold medal in playwriting at the national competition but was not able to attend the board meeting because he is already in school at Morehouse College in Atlanta. |
From the floor, several legislators praised Bronz for bringing the program and its outstanding young students to the attention of the Board and the public.
