On Sunay, April 8th, Westchester County Legislator David Tubiolo (Yonkers & Mt. Vernon) led a group of volunteers at a “Community Clean-up” at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers.

Tubiolo and his team spent the better part of the afternoon at the beginning of Tibbetts Brook Park (the intersection of McLean Avenue and Midland Avenue) picking up old garbage such as gatorade and beer bottles, broken glass, cardboard boxes, Christmas lights, Christmas trees, milk cartons, paint cans, potato chip bags, styrofoam and numerous other items.

“Over the course of two hours, there was 14 recyclable trash bags filled with garbage,” said Tubiolo, who is a member of the Legislature’s Committee on Parks, Planning & Economic Development. “The City’s, County’s and State’s Parks Department does an outstanding job of taking care of all of Westchester’s fine parks, but we need community support to supplement their great work,” he continued.

According to Tubiolo, nearly a dozen volunteers, including two children, did just that.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22, which began in 1970 in the United States to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Currently, over 190 countries worldwide observe and celebrate Earth Day.

National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week of April 15th – 21st this year.

“Education is the foundation for progress, and comes in many forms,” Tubiolo said. “By organizing our friends and neighbors to volunteer for a “Community Clean-up”, we’re empowering those who volunteer by making them part of the solution while letting them see first-hand how one person can really make a difference. Hopefully these volunteers will use this experience to inspire others into action to help protect our environment.”
Volunteer Joe Pinion said “conservation starts at home, and we have a responsibility to clean up our own communities, for the good of the next generation as well as to set an example for the next generation. I am honored to volunteer alongside Legislator Tubiolo. ”

Legislator Tubiolo’s next “Community Clean-up” is being scheduled for Fleetwood in the city of Mount Vernon.
