Statement from Legislator Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) on County Executive Astorino’s Support of Taxpayer Sponsored Gun Shows

Items for Sale at 2017 Gun Show

(WHITE PLAINS, NY) “While the vendor for the 2017 gun show is advertising the sale of military style weapons at the 2018 gun show slated to take place in January at the Westchester County Center – the County Executive is insisting that ‘no contract is yet in place.’  That is a disingenuous representation of what his plans for taxpayer money are.

“Hosting this show on our property is a wink and a nod to the ‘many sides’ argument outlined by President Trump in the wake of the horrific events in Charlottesville. The gun show in January saw the sale of Confederate Flags & weapons with the Confederate flag emblazoned upon them, images promoting date rape, and other symbols of hate. Our taxpayer funded facilities are no place for the sale of these items.

“Further, the ‘bump stocks’ found in the Las Vegas shooter’s hotel room are often for sale at gun shows like the one to be hosted in our backyard. Enough is enough. I introduced the legislation to prohibit the sale of guns on County property years ago because it was the right thing to do then – and the same is true now. It is up to us to put a stop to taxpayer funded gun shows and override County Executive Astorino’s veto.”
