Statement from Board of Legislators Democratic Caucus on Attempt to Override County Executive’s Immigrant Protection Act Veto

(WHITE PLAINS, NY) “While we are not surprised by tonight’s outcome – it truly is disappointing for the people of Westchester County. The Immigrant Protection Act is a public safety bill, crafted with the help of law enforcement officers and immigration lawyers, which aims to protect all residents of Westchester. Studies from all over the country show that our immigrant neighbors are less likely to assist local police departments when they feel that is may result in immigration consequences. Upholding the veto makes none of us safer.

“The County Executive’s effort to appease the need for this legislation with his Executive Order, which weakens County Executive Andy Spano’s 2002 Executive Order, is not – and will never be – enough. Like President Trump’s Executive Orders will make America less safe, the County Executive’s Executive Order will do the same for us in Westchester.

“We thank all of the advocates and concerned residents who have made their voices heard like never before and rest assured – we will reintroduce this bill tomorrow. This fight is not over.”
