On Friday, November 4 at the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL), Legislator David Tubiolo (R-Mount Vernon & Yonkers) hosted a Mock Legislature for the 5th grade class of St. John the Baptist Elementary School.  The students were chaperoned by their 5th grade teacher Mrs. Maria Muoio, and parents.

A Mock Legislature gives an opportunity for our youth to appreciate and experience first-hand the role of legislator and county government. The students discuss educational and fun items in committees pertaining to their youth such as, community service, curfew, school uniform and snacks being served in the cafeteria.

Legislator Tubiolo supervised the students exercising and practicing their rights as Legislators to voice their opinion on behalf of the people they serve. He also explained democracy and the history Westchester County beginning in 1664 to the present.

“It’s paramount that our youth is educated and learn the importance of exercising their voice in government. Our Mock Legislature is a new and exciting way to attract our youth to the importance of democracy and our freedom to speak and vote” said Legislator Tubiolo.

Legislator Tubiolo explained the history of Westchester County, along with the day-to-day operations of county government and the importance of representing the people to the best of everyone’s ability. Once the Mock Legislature was complete, every student received a Certificate of Merit and Golden Apple.

“What a wonderful opportunity to make the importance of government come alive for children. Legislator Tubiolo’s enthusiasm keeps the children’s attention, while teaching them valuable information about the inner workings of county government. We are fortunate to have participated in the Mock Legislature for two consecutive years. We are looking forward to next year” said Mrs. Maria Muoio.
