Yonkers, Mount Vernon

Bernice Spreckman is a longtime resident of Yonkers. She was first elected in 1995 to the 14th district’s county legislative seat.  Prior to becoming a county legislator, Bernice served in several posts in Yonkers city government, including three terms as 2nd ward councilmember, councilmember-at-large, vice mayor and chair of the city council's committees on rules and real estate. Bernice was also elected the first female president of the New York State Councilman's Association

Bernice currently serves as a member of the committees on Infrastructure and Public Safety & Social Services.    She was the chair of the board’s former committee on Seniors which then became the committee on Generational, Cultural and Ethnic Diversity and is now the committee on Seniors and Constituencies. She is also the chairperson of the Westchester County Council for Seniors and its federal counterpart, the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council.  Bernice was also named Senior Affairs Liaison to the City of Yonkers Mayor, Mike Spano.  A tireless advocate for senior citizens, Bernice has initiated several successful and innovative programs, lead an annual lobby day in Albany for Westchester citizens to express their concerns, worked in a bi-partisan manor to pass Universal Design legislation to benefit senior citizens and the disabled community, and co-hosts an Annual Legislative Speak-Out with the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services.

Bernice organized an information drive to make seniors aware of the “balanced billing” law, and works closely with the New York State Attorney General’s office on ways to combat elder fraud and abuse.  In 2002, she was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame and in 2003, she was designated “Woman of the Year” by the Westchester County Federation of Women’s Clubs, as well as being selected the 2004 recipient of the Rose Kryzak Advocacy Award by the New York State Senior Action Council.  She has also been honored by the 12th Ward Republican Club, received the 2010 Community Service Award from 55 Plus Yonkers for her years of dedicated service to the Yonkers Community and most recently received the 2015 Women of Distinction Award from the City of Yonkers.

In keeping with her passion of having seniors stay active and engaged in their community, Bernice has, for the past 29 years, been the producer and coordinator of a senior show that takes place twice a year and is enjoyed by more than 300 local attendees.  These shows are performed by senior citizens, who spend months rehearsing, for a largely senior audience; after the main show, the group does an abbreviated version at local nursing/assisted living homes.

Through all her endeavors, Bernice has enjoyed the love and support of her wonderful family; her devoted sons Alan, and his wife Jill, Rory, Howie, and his wife Dana.  She is the proud grandmother of Andrew, Evan, Jake, Jaclyn, Brian, Craig, Mason, Jackson and Julianna.
